With the holidays over and another season of football coming to an end, many locals know to turn their attentions to live entertainment on the South Coast and are amply rewarded!  The Zeiterion Performing Arts Center or “The Z” as it is locally known offers outstanding national touring shows. Saturday Night Fever

Saturday Night Fever: The Musical” is this Sunday afternoon, January 17th. You’ll want to be dancing yourself to all the vintage Bee Gee disco hits! The Daily Telegraph says the show has “unforgettable sones and big choreographic setpieces!”

On Wednesday night, February 3rd, New Orleans native Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews lights up the stage with his “Supafunkrock” sound which is a mix of rock, funk, jazz, hip-hop and soul. Plus “The Record Company” are his special guests.Rasin Cane

Friday, February 5th, brings award-winning actress, singer and dancer Jasmine Guy to the theater for “Raisin’ Cane“, a Harlem Renaissance Odyssey capturing the artistic outpouring of 1920’s Harlem with the Avery Sharpe Jazz Trio.

Sunday afternoon on February 7th brings a whale of a tale in an imaginative retelling of Moby Dick using props and musical instruments to recreate live on the Pequod. The New York Times hailed this adaptation as “a luminous and engrossing”.

The Moth Hour

The Moth Mainstage comes to New Bedford and The Z for the first time on Tuesday evening, February 9th. The Moth has five storytellers who tell their true stories and you never know how things might unfold. The Wall Street Journal says The Moth Mainstage is “New York’s hottest and hippest literary ticket”.

The first of this year’s New Bedford Symphony Orchestra’s concert series is February 20th with Britten, Schumann & Mussorgsky. Enjoy Benjamin Britten’s dramatic “Four Sea Interludes” from “Peter Grimes”, Robert Schumann’s Cello Concerto in A Minor with guest artist Carter Brey of the New York Philharmonic, and Modest Mussorgsky’s “Pictures at an Exhibition”, orchestration by Maurice Ravel which is one of the most popular arrangements. Special $10 tickets are available for children and students.

The Gypsy Kings

February really heats up with Grammy Award-winning “Gipsy Kings“. Some may just know their music from movies like “The Big Lebowski”, “Toy Story 3” and TV shows like “Glee”, but they will raise the roof with with their sounds of flamenco, rumba, salsa and pop as they come to party.

The party continues with “A Night with Janis Joplin“, the National Broadway Tour, starring Mary Bridget Davies who brings the Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll to life along with the music scene of 1967. Variety says, “She looks like Joplin, sings like Joplin, and howls like Joplin in a show and a role-of-a-lifetime that she owns. It’s not only an amazing performance; it’s a generous one.”

Wrapping up February, is first part of the Dance Series Package at The Z with Los Angeles Contemporary Dance Company – BODYTRAFFIC. Repertory includes works by Richard Siegal, Barak Marshall and Kyle Abraham. Become enveloped in the warm, innovative and sexy moves and pure joy of dance.
