National Dog Month: Tips for a Dog-Friendly Home

It might not be a surprise, but the most popular pet in the United States are Dogs! Dogs can be found in over 69 Million households as of 2022. To many, Dogs aren’t just a pet but a member of the family, that brings them happiness and makes life interesting all the time. As much as we all love having man’s best friend living with us, having a dog requires some concessions and special tricks for homeowners to make it work. Here are tips to create a dog-friendly home.

#1. Invest in hardwood floors and avoid carpeting

To avoid scratches, hardwood floors are recommended. Maple, mahogany and oak are among the best. Carpets, on the other hand, absorb odors and keep pet hair trapped which make them difficult to clean.

#2. Dark-colored furniture

Accidents happen. But the right colored furniture or pattern can help hide stains and pet hair far better than the cream-colored loveseat you have been eyeing. Stain-resistant fabrics are also available at many furniture stores.

#3. Fence yourselves in

Fenced in back yard

A fenced-in yard is essential for homeowners. Allowing your dog to run free, will ensure less time spent indoors with the chance of an accident. By allowing them to run off their energy in the open air, they may be calmer and gentler indoors and not destroy all your throw pillows.

#4. Have a designated entry way for your dog

Be it a mudroom or entryway, keep the area where your dog enters stocked with towels and cleaning supplies. The last thing you want is Fido running into the home with wet and dirty paws. Some homeowners are even adding a dog washing station to their mudrooms.
